Twitter Me This …
May 29th, 2009 by Adilene

When you Google “Twitter” you get 429,000,000 results. A February 2009 blog entry ranked Twitter as the third most used social network (Facebook being the largest, followed by MySpace). You may be starting to hear about “Twitter” and think to yourself what IS Twitter?

Twitter can be defined as a “micro blogging platform.” It allows you to publish short messages of less than 140 characters through different ways like IM, cellphones and the web. Tweets posts are displayed on the user’s profile page and delivered to other users who have subscribed to them (known as followers). It is simply another way of communicating.

You may wonder who is using Twitter. The answer is anyone and everyone. Celebrities such as David Archuleta, John Mayer, Jordin Sparks and many others are using Twitter as an easy way of keeping in touch with fans. Many businesses are starting to advertise with Twitter. In a recent interview Melina Kanakerdes talked about how her child’s kindergarten teacher uses Twitter to keep parents up to date on the class happenings throughout the day. Everyday bloggers use twitter, and people who just want to keep in touch with family and friends.

“The result of using Twitter to stay connected with friends, relatives, and coworkers and that you have a sense of what folks are up to.” At Twitter, one question is asked, “What are you doing?” you answer, it is that simple.

Note – It’s always important to be cautious of what you post on the Internet. Never post personal information because anyone can access it and be careful with whom you communicate with through the web.

Boys Volleyball: CCS 1st match
May 26th, 2009 by Amanda

by Amanda Stickel (spanish version)

The 5th seeded Harbor boys Varsity volleyball team played an outstanding game last Thursday night (May 14th, 2009), at home, against the 4th seeded Monterey in the teams’ CCS Division II quarterfinal.  Unfortunately game one in CCS for our boys team, was their last.  The first match of CCS was suppose to be held over in Monterey since they were the 4th seeded team, however Harbor was lucky to get a home game; tons of fans came to support.  Harbor battled back and forth with Monterey trying to take each game from them, but it seemed as if they only had luck on one side of the court.  In game one Harbor blew Monterey away, making Monterey look like the 5th seeded team in CCS.  With Harbor’s tall middles, great outside hitters, and back row players that could dig almost any ball, Harbor wouldn’t let the ball hit the ground.  The final score of match one was 17-25  However, once game two came around, Monterey started picking up their game and Harbor’s hope started to decrease.  Even though their hope was dwindling down, Harbor battled back and forth until the last point in game two, leaving the score at 25-22, Monterey taking the win.

In game three, they played hard once again, but played on what to be their “good luck side of the court”; Harbor took another win at 22-25.  After the two teams switch sides and the whistle blew for the first serve of game four, Harbor fought yet ANOTHER battle; pushing harder and harder to win game four so they won’t have to go into a game five.  However, luck just wasn’t in the Harbor gym that night for the pirates.  Monterey took game four at 25-23, matching Harbor with 2 wins against 2 wins.  Harbor thought that with all their raging fans in the crowd cheering for them that it would pump them up in game five; that was not the case.  Game five ended with the score 15-9 as Monterey took the win and moved on to the next round.  Despite the loss, they battled hard and played a good game.  By not making it to the next round, it gave the seniors a chance to make their senior prom that Saturday night; which would have been the next round for CCS at Independence High.

The team stats for the star players of the game are: Chicory Roth pounded out 17 kills and passed spotlessly. De Martini had 47 assists. Michael Vahradian led the team with 23 kills, and five blocks. Cooper Walters added three kills and seven blocks.

Harbor Valedictorians of 2009
May 26th, 2009 by Alex

by Alex Davis

Harbor Highs class of 2009 has four senior valedictorians. They are Alex Ledwith, Katy Helenga, Karissa Cook, and Xi(Summer) Pan. These four students are top in their graduating class and have accomplished an amazing goal throughout their scholastic careers so far. Both Alex Ledwith and Karissa Cook are also athletic scholars. Alex enjoys playing soccer for Harbor High, on various club teams, and he was on Varsity all four years. He is not sure on whether he will continue soccer at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, he is still in the process of making that complicated decision. Karissa plays volleyball for Harbor and participated on Varisty all four years as well. Karissa will be attending Stanford on a volleyball and academic based full ride scholarship.

To get a better insight on what goals these valedictorians have set for themselves outside of high school, i interviewed Alex Ledwith. Something that i was interested in was if he had taken a lot of challenging courses throughout his four years at Harbor. Alex said, “Yes i did, i always like to take the best of what is offered to me.” I then asked Alex what had inspired him to keep his grades up throughout high school and was it stressful? Alex replied, “It was more for self satisfaction and knowing that i could achieve good grades if i challenged myself. It was stressful at times but school can be, it comes with the success” My third question was, how important is your education to your family and friends?  He stated, “My education is very important to my family, ofcourse they want to see me suceed.” Lastly i asked Alex why he was the only one that planned to speak at graduation and why he had chose to speak? He said, “I did not really choose to speak, none of the other valedictorians wanted to so i kind of got handed the speech position. Hopefully it goes well.”

Harbor Baseball’s First CCS Game
May 26th, 2009 by Garrett

by Garrett Beyers

On Wednesday Harbor baseball played their first CCS against Pacific Grove. Can you say nail biter? It was a back and forth game all game long. Harbor scored first in the first inning but PG came right back with 3 runs of their own. Harbor then tied the game again, but PG tacked on 2 more runs of their own. But, Harbor kept fighting and scored once more. Then in the fifth inning with a runner on third and two outs, Tanner Richie came through in the clutch with a base hit up the middle, and once again we found ourselves in a tie ballgame. Michael Finelli was doing the pitching and shut down PG with a one, two, three inning to bring Harbor up to bat again. With two outs and two runners on, Beau Borek stepped up to the plate. Borek gets his pitch and drives a ball over the right fielders head and scores both the runs but gets thrown out at third going for a triple. The runs counted though to make it 7-5 and Harbor has its first lead since the 1st inning. Once again Finelli shut down PG and the Pirates had a silent 7th inning. This made it 7-5 Harbor just three outs away from victory. Finelli sat down the first two batters with two strikeouts. Harbor was just one out away from victory. The next batter was walked. Finelli had two strikes on the next batter, but the umpire just wouldn’t give him the third strike call on two very close pitches. The batter ended up hitting a ball up the middle where Richie almost made a beautiful play that would have ended the game. The next batter was walked to load the bases. Up came the next batter who singled up the middle and scored two runs to tie the game. Once again the bases got loaded. The batter hit a high bouncer to short, which gave Richie no time to make a play, and Pacific Grove walked away with the victory. It was a hard fought game but after Finelli had thrown 130 pitches, he just couldn’t quite shut down PG for the final out. So unfortunatly, this would be Harbor’s first and last CCS game this season.

ROP Medical Technology
May 22nd, 2009 by Haley Varenkamp

by Haley Varencamp

Are you interested in going into the health care field after high school? If you answered yes, then ROP Medical Technologies is a must-take class for you. It is a year long class with tons of information and opportunities to get a head start in a medical profession. The class goes over all of the different body systems and includes diseases, disorders, signs & symptoms, and first aid for each. You look into the respiratory (lungs), circulatory (heart), digestive, skeletal, nervous (brain), urinary, and reproductive systems. The class includes a certification in CPR and first aid. The other option for obtaining a certificate would be to sit in a classroom all day on a Saturday or Sunday.

In the second semester the class meets a couple times a month at Dominican Hospital to job shadow the nurses. This is a great opportunity to get an inside look at how a career in the medical field is and if it is right for you. Each time you get to go into a different section of the hospital and see something different. Over the years students have even seen a baby being born! After taking this class, I would definitely recommend it to anyone who is thinking about a career in  the medical field. You will learn a ton and the teachers are very helpful and understanding.
